Microbial and solute transport through intact vadose zone cores of heterogeneous alluvial gravel under variably saturated conditions

چکیده

The movement of bacterial and viral pathogens through soil vadose zone subsequently into groundwater is a major public health concern. There are relatively few studies on the transport fate microbes variably saturated media compared with their in zones. In this study, we investigated Escherichia coli, F-RNA bacteriophage MS2, conservative solute tracer bromide three intact cores, under (discharge rate ∼100 mm h−1) unsaturated 10 0.5 flow conditions. were sandy gravel overlying sand lens core 1, heterogeneous SG mix 2, an open framework middle 3. regimes resulted different characteristics each cores. As expected, microbial all cores was higher conditions, Overall, E. coli removal consistently greater than that MS2 phage irrespective or minor removals (factors 1–2.5) both reductions 2–3 orders magnitude high almost complete (4 to >5 magnitude) low much conditions has significant implications potential benefits for land management decisions.

Modelling multiple solute transport in variably saturated soils

This paper presents two models typical of two different approaches often used for modelling the advective-dispersive transport of multiple ions in variably-saturated porous media. The first approach assumes that all solute reactions can be incorporated directly into the governing transport equations (the one-step method), while the second approach divides the mathematical solution process into ...

A three-dimensional numerical model for water flow and transport of chemically reactive solute through porous media under variably saturated conditions

A three-dimensional numerical model is developed for the simulation of water flow and chemical transport through variably saturated porous media. The nonlinear flow equation is solved using the Galerkin finite element technique with the Picard iteration scheme and a continuous velocity field is obtained by separate application of the Galerkin technique to the flux equation. A two-site adsorptio...

Three-dimensional analysis of variably-saturated flow and solute transport in discretely-fractured porous media

A discrete fracture, saturated-unsaturated numerical model is developed where the porous matrix is represented in three dimensions and fractures are represented by two-dimensional planes. This allows a fully three-dimensional description of the fracture network connectivity. Solute advection and diffusion in the porous matrix are also directly accounted for. The variably-saturated flow equation...

Colloid-facilitated Transport of Radionuclides through the Vadose Zone

Research Objectives: This project seeks to improve the basic understanding of colloid and colloid-facilitated transport of Cs in the vadose zone. The specific objectives are: • Determine the structure, composition, and surface charge characteristics of colloidal particles formed under conditions similar to those occurring during leakage of waste typical of Hanford tank supernatants into soils a...
